Windows Update is a feature included in the Microsoft Windows operating system that provides regular updates for security, performance and feature upgrades for the Windows platform. By default, Windows Update is configured to automatically download and install updates when they become available.
In some cases, it might be desirable to change the configuration of Windows Update using the Control Panel. This article provides information on how to configure Windows Update settings in the Control Panel.
1. Open the Control Panel.
To open the Control Panel, type “Control Panel” into the Windows 10 search bar in the lower left corner of your desktop. Once the list of results appears, select “Control Panel” by clicking on it with your mouse.
2. Select “System and Security”.
Once the Control Panel window appears, select “System and Security” from the list of available options.
3. Select “Windows Update”.
Under the “System and Security” heading, select the “Windows Update” option.
4. Click “Change Settings”.
On the “Windows Update” page, you will see the “Change Settings” option. Click this option to begin configuring Windows Update.
5. Choose an update setting.
On the “Change Settings” page, you will have three options for updating: Automatic (recommended) Install updates automatically, Download updates but let me choose whether to install them, or Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them.
Choosing the “Automatic (recommended)” option will enable Windows Update to automatically download and install all recommended updates. The other two options allow you to manually approve or decline recommended updates.
6. Select a Windows Update schedule
On the “Change Settings” page, there is also an option to set a schedule for when Windows Update will search for, download and install updates. You can select any of the presets or create a custom schedule.
7. Click “OK”.
Once you have chosen the desired settings, click “OK” to save your changes and exit the “Change Settings” page.
After completing these steps, Windows Update should now be configured according to your preferences. Depending on the selected settings, the computer may need to be restarted before the changes take effect.
