There are many ways to install a program on a computer depending on what type of program you are installing. Below we will discuss some of the more common methods for installing programs on a Windows PC.
1. Installing via an .exe file:
The most common method for installing programs on PCs is through an .exe file. An .exe file is simply an executable program that opens up a graphical user interface (GUI) where you can click through the installation instructions to install the program on your computer. To install an .exe file, first make sure you download the file from a trusted source and save it to a place where you will remember, such as the desktop or downloads folder. Once the file has downloaded, open the folder where it is saved and double-click the file to launch the installation process. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
2. Installing via the Microsoft Store:
If the program you are installing is available in the Microsoft Store, you can easily install it without ever leaving your web browser. First, open the Microsoft Store and search for the program you want to install. Once it appears in the search results, click on the entry to view its profile page. Here you will find an “Install” button that allows you to install the program with one click. Confirm any pop-up information regarding permissions or additional services associated with the program and the program will begin downloading and installing.
3. Installing via an Installer Disk:
If you have a physical copy of the program, such as on a CD or DVD, you can use the installer disk to install the program. Insert the disk into the computer’s optical drive (if available) or connect it to the USB port if it is a USB drive. Double-click on the installer file to launch the installer and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
4. Installing using a DMG File:
If you are installing a Mac OS X program, it may come as a DMG file. This is simply an archive file that contains the installer for the program. To extract the installer from the file, double-click on the DMG file. This will open a window in Finder with the installer. Drag the icon for the program onto the Applications folder to begin the installation.
