How can I configure my network settings in the Control Panel?

Configuring your network settings in the Windows Control Panel can be done for both wired and wireless connections. This tutorial will walk you through the steps of setting up a wired connection, as well as setting up a wireless connection.

Configuring a Wired Network Connection

Step 1: Go to the Start Menu located in the lower left-hand corner of your desktop.

Step 2: Type ‘Control Panel’ into the search box, and click on it when it appears.

Step 3: Once the Control Panel is opened, select ‘Network and Internet’.

Step 4: Select ‘Network and Sharing Center’.

Step 5: From the options available, select ‘Set up a new connection or network’.

Step 6: When a window opens, select ‘Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password’, then click ‘Next’.

Step 7: Type in the information required by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). This will include the type of Broadband Access, the name of your ISP, the user name and password provided by your ISP. Click ‘Next’ when you are finished.

Step 8: Depending on the type of connection you have, you may need to enter further information such as the Domain Name Server (DNS) addresses.

Step 9: When you have entered all the information required, click ‘Next’. Your computer will attempt to connect to the internet.

Step 10: Once connected, click ‘Close’ to finish the connection.

Configuring a Wireless Network Connection

Step 1: Make sure your wireless router is plugged into a power outlet and connected to your modem.

Step 2: Go to the Start Menu located in the lower left-hand corner of your desktop.

Step 3: Type ‘Control Panel’ into the search box, and click on it when it appears.

Step 4: Once the Control Panel is opened, select ‘Network and Internet’.

Step 5: Select ‘Network and Sharing Center’.

Step 6: From the options available, select ‘Set up a new connection or network’.

Step 7: When a window opens, select ‘Wireless’ then click ‘Next’.

Step 8: A list of available networks should appear. Select the desired network and enter the Network Security Key if prompted.

Step 9: Once the connection has been established, click ‘Close’ to finish the configuration.
