A .docx file is a Microsoft Word document created in the default 2007+ document format. It can be opened and edited by any version of Word from 2007 and later, as well as some earlier versions with an add-in installed.
To open a .docx document on Windows, simply double click it to open it in Microsoft Word. The document should open in the latest version of Word, or the version of Word you have previously selected as your default program for opening Word documents.
If you don’t have Microsoft Word installed on your computer, you can also download and install the free Microsoft Word Viewer application. This allows you to open, print, and copy text from .docx documents without needing to purchase the full version of the program.
Another alternative is to convert the .docx file into a different file format, such as PDF, HTML, or plain text. This can be done using a variety of online tools or by opening the document in Microsoft Word, going to the ‘File’ tab, and selecting ‘Save As’. Select the desired destination file format from the drop-down menu and click ‘Save’.
If you are using a Mac, you can use Apple’s Pages program to open .docx files. You can also open .docx files directly in TextEdit, though formatting and layout may not be retained.
Finally, many cloud storage services such as Google Drive and Dropbox let you open .docx files in their online viewers, allowing you to view the contents of your document without having to install Microsoft Word or any other software.
